SUMMER AND WINTER

SUMMARY

The poem "Summer and Winter" draws comparisons between the two seasons, highlighting how different summer's energy and excitement are from winter's lifelessness. Winter is associated with death and animal migration, whereas summer is characterised by brilliant clouds, lush vegetation, and the pleasures of sunlight. Fish freezing in chilly seas and dirt and slime developing into bricks are two further effects on aquatic life. The poem also emphasises the gap between the rich and the poor, with the former suffering the cold and the latter being unable to take solace in it.
