Class 8th

RUSTAM AND SOHRAB

SUMMARY

Rustam, A Great Soldier Of Persia, Was Known As The Shield Of Persia And Was Praised By King Kaikoos For His Bravery. He Met Tartar Princess Tanimeh During A Trip And Married Her, But Was Soon Called Back By The King. Before Leaving, Rustam Gave Tanimeh A Precious Stone To Tie To Their Child's Arm When He Was Born. Tanimeh Gave Birth To A Son, Sohrab, Who Learned The Use Of The Sword And Became A Skilled Warrior.

One Day, A Challenger Came To His Country And Challenged Sohrab To Single Combat With A Condition To Tell Him About His Father. Sohrab Learned About His Father, Rustam, And Returned Home, Persuading His Mother To Search For Him. She Gave Him The Precious Stone With Which His Father Would Recognise Him. Sohrab Marched To Persia With His Army, Wanting To Find His Father And Make Him The King Of Persia.

Kaikoos Sent His Army To Fight Sohrab, But They Were No Match For Him. He Promised To Spare The Persian Army If Their Champion Fought With Him In A Single Battle. The King Sent For Rustam, Who Initially Hesitated But Eventually Came Disguised. When Sohrab Asked If He Was Rustam, He Didn't Reveal His Identity.

The Two Warriors Fought For Three Days, And Rustam Gave Out His War Cry, "Rustam," And Rushed At Sohrab. Sohrab Dropped His Shield, And Rustam's Sword Pierced His Body. Sohrab Revealed His Identity By Showing His Father The Precious Stone He Had Given Him. Rustam Felt Sad And Bitterly Wept, But Sohrab Comforted Him And Asked Him To Carry His Body To His Home And Bury Him There.

1. Why Was Rustam Not Able To Live With His Wife For A Long Time?

Ans. Rustam Was A Superb Persian Commander. He Wed The Tartar Princess Tanimeh, But He Was Unable To Stay With Her Long Because The Persian Monarch, Believing His Country Would Be Unsafe Without Him, Sent For Him.

2. Why Did Tanimeh Send Word To Rustam That Their Child Was A Daughter?

Ans. Tanimeh Imagined Rustam Would Be Thrilled To See Their Child Follow In His Footsteps When He Grew Up. She Informed Him Of Her Daughter's Birth By Text Message.

3. What Secret Did Sohrab Learn From His Mother?

Ans. Sohrab Learned The Truth—That Rustam Was His Father.

4. What Did Tanimeh Want Sohrab To Do When He Met His Father?

Ans. Tanimeh Desired That Sohrab Identify Himself With Rustam By Revealing The Valuable Stone He Carried On His Arm.

5. Why Was Rustam At First Not Ready To Fight Sohrab?

Ans. Rustam Had Grown Old And Had To Take Care Of His Elderly Father, So He Wasn't Initially Prepared To Battle Sohrab.

6. Why Did Rustam Not Tell Sohrab Who He Was?

Ans. Because Rustam Believed That If Sohrab Knew Who He Was, He Might Want To Make Peace With Him And Give Up The Struggle, He Chose Not To Reveal His Identity To Him.

7. How Was Sohrab Wounded?

Ans. Sohrab Fought Rustam For Three Days. Rustam Started To Feel That It Would Be Embarrassing For Him If He Lost. With That, He Lifted His Sword And Yelled "Rustam," His War Cry. Sohrab Was Momentarily Unsettled At Hearing That Cry And Let Down His Shield. Rustam Was Injured When His Body Was Penetrated By The Sword.

8. What Were Sohrab’s Last Words?
