'Coal And Petroleum'

 Textbook Questions

Q. 1.What are the advantages of using CNG and LPG as fuels?

Ans:- They are called clean fuels because they burn with a smokeless flame and therefore do not cause any pollution. They burn without leaving ashes. They are easy to handle and store.

Q. 2.Name the petroleum product used for surfacing of roads.

Ans:- Bitumen is the petroleum product used for surfacing of roads.

Q. 3.Describe how coal is formed from dead vegetation. What is this process called?

Ans:-Coal is formed in side the earth by the process of carbonisation in this process different kinds of organic matter like (plants and animals) get impressed between the different layers of earth.

Q. 4.Fill in the blanks.

(a) Fossils fuels are ____ , ____ and ____

(b) Process of separation of different constituents from petroleum is called ______

(c) Least polluting fuel for vehicle is ______

Answer:

(a) coal, petroleum, natural gas

(b) refining

(c) CNG

Q. 5.Tick True/False against the following statements.

(a) Fossil fuels can be made in the laboratory.

(b) CNG is more polluting fuel than petrol.

(c) Coke is an almost pure form of carbon.

(d) Coal tar is a mixture of various substances.

(e) Kerosene is not a fossil fuel.

Answer:

(a) False

(b) False

(c) True

(d) True

(e) False

Q. 6.Explain why fossil fuels are exhaustible natural resources.

Ans:- Fossil fuels are exhaustible because they take millions of years in formation . They  cannot be replenished easily, once consumed.

Q. 7.Describe the characteristics and uses of coke.

Ans:- Coke is 98% pure carbon. It is a tough, porous and black substance. It pro-duces a very little smoke on burning. It is used as very efficient fuel. It is a excellent reducing agent. It is  used in metallurgical operations to reduce metals from their oxides.

Q. 8. Explain the process of the formation of petroleum.

Ans:-Petroleum is formed by the burial of aquatic plants and animals below the sea bed. In absence of air, under high temperature and high pressure these dead organisms transform in petroleum in this way petroleum is formed .

Q. 9.The following table shows the total power shortage in India from 1991-1997. Show the data in the form of a graph. Plot shortage percentage for the years on Y-axis and the year on the X-axis.

S. No. Year Shortage (% age)

1 1991 7.9

2 1992 7.8

3 1993 8.3

4 1994 7.4

5 1995 7.1

6 1996 9.2

7 1997 11.5

Answer:

Q. 10. What are exhaustible natural resources give examples.

Ans:-The natural resources which are president in limited quantities in nature, they will not last long if man uses them consistently .eg, fossil fuels such as oil, coal, natural gas, and minerals

Q. 11. What are inexhaustible natural resources give examples .

Ans:-The natural resources which are present abundantly in nature, they are long lasting instead of using them continuously, eg, solar energy, wind energy, Geothermal energy, tidal energy etc

Q. 12.why is natural gas is called a clean fuel.?

Ans:- Natural gas is called a clean fuel because  after burning it produces least amount of carbon emissions gases and other hazardous chemicals.

Q. 13.what are the uses of coal?

Ans:- Coal is used in cooking food, to run railway engines, in manufacturing industries, Thermal power plants, preparation of coke, coal tar and coal gas.
