Chapter 1-'Resources'
Geography
Chapter 1- Resources
Q. What
are resources?
Ans:- Anything that can be
used to to full fill a need is called a resource, such as water,
soil, forests, minerals, buildings, roads etc. usability makes
an object or substance a resource.
Q. How does
something become a resource?
Ans:- when something is
use at mass level that gives it a value. All resources do not have same
value. Some resources have economic value, some do not. For example,
metals may have an economic value, a beautiful landscape may not. But both are
important and satisfy human needs. Time and technology are two
important factors that can change substances or a thing into
resources.
Q. what are
the different Types of Resources?
Resources are generally
classified into natural, and Man Made
(A) Natural
Resources:
Resources
that are obtained from Nature and
used without much change are called natural
resources. The air we breathe, the water in our rivers and lakes and
oceans(water resource), the soils, minerals are all natural
resources. Many of these resources are free gifts of nature and can be
used as directly.
Natural resources can be
broadly categorised into renewable and non renewable resources.
(1)
Renewable resources are those which get renewed or replenished
quickly. Some of these are unlimited and are not affected by human
activities, such as solar and wind energy.
(2)
Non-renewable resources are those which have a
limited stock. Once the stocks are exhausted it may
take thousands of years to be renewed
or replenished. Coal, petroleum and natural gas are some examples.
Distribution
of Resources:
The distribution of natural
resources depends upon number of physical factors like terrain, climate
and altitude. The distribution of resources is unequal because these
factors differ on the surface of earth.
(B)
Man Made Resources :-
Sometimes, natural substances
become resources only when their original form has been changed by the
intervention of man . Iron ore was not a resource until man learnt
to extract iron from it. People use natural resources to make buildings,
bridges, roads, machinery and vehicles, which are known as man made
resources. Technology is also a man made resource.
(C) Human
Resources:
People can make the best use
of nature to create more resources when they have the knowledge, skill
and the technology to do so. That is why human beings are a special
resource. People are called human resources. Education and health
help in making people a valuable resource.
Human Resource refers to the
number (quantity) and abilities (mental and physical) of the
people. Though, there are differing views regarding treatment of humans as
a resource, one cannot deny the fact that it is the skills of human that
help in transferring the physical material into a valuable
resource. Improving the quality of people’s skills so
that they are able to create more resources is known as human
resource development.
Q .
Conserving Resources And Sustainable Development
Using resources judiciously
and giving them time to get renewed or replenish is called.
resource conservation. Balancing the need to use resources and also
conserve them for the future is called sustainable development.
Sustainable
Development:
Carefully utilising resources
so that besides meeting the requirements of the present, also takes care
of future generations. There are many ways of conserving resources.
Each person can contribute by reducing consumption, recycling and reusing
thing (3 R’s). Ultimately it makes a difference because all our lives are
linked.
Some
Principles of Sustainable Development:
➡Respect and
care for all forms of life
➡ Improve
the quality of human life
➡ Conserve
the earth’s vitality and diversity
➡ Conserve
the depletion of natural resources
➡ Change
personal attitude and practices towards the environment
➡ Enable
communities to care for their own environment.
TEXT BOOK TYPE QUESTIONS
1. Answer the following questions:
(i). Why are resources unequally distributed over the earth?
Ans.
The distribution of natural resources depends upon a number of physical factors
like terrain, climate and altitude. And these factors are not same everywhere
and vary from place to place on the earth. Hence we find the distribution of
resources unequal over the earth.
(ii). What is the resource conservation?
Ans.
Using resources carefully and giving them. time to get renewed is called
resource conservation.
(ii) Why are human resources important?
Ans.
People are human resources and human resources are important because people can
make the best uses of nature to create more resources by applying knowledge,
skill and technology.
(iv) What is sustainable development?
Ans.
Balancing the need to use resources and also conserve them for the future is
called sustainable development. In other words, carefully utilizing resources
so that besides meeting the present requirements it also takes care of the need
of future generations is what is known as sustainable development.
